Carat (ct) is the unit of measurement used to describe the weight of a gemstone—not its size. One carat equals 0.2 grams, or 200 milligrams.
How large a gemstone appears at a given carat weight depends on two key factors: its cut and its density. A sapphire or ruby (corundum) has a higher density than a diamond. As a result, a sapphire or ruby with the same carat weight will usually appear slightly smaller than a diamond, even though both gemstones weigh exactly the same.
