How can I commission a gemstone
made from ashes or hair?
In times of grief, it is often difficult to make decisions. That is why MEVISTO guides you through the process step by step – with empathy, transparency and without any time pressure.

Choose your gemstone
What would you like your keepsake stone to look like? The first step is to decide on the colour, shape and size of the gemstone. All the options are shown in the product catalogue or in the online shop.
- Colour: You can choose from red, blue and natural. The final shade is determined by the biogenic material itself – making every gemstone truly one of a kind.
- Size: Sizes range from 0.5 to 12 carats (1 carat equals 0.2 g). On request, special cuts to individual size specifications are also possible – from 2.5 mm upwards, almost any design can be realised.
- The cut: Ten different cuts are available – from round to heart-shaped to square – with special shapes available on request.
A piece of jewellery – yes or no?
We can set the gemstone in 14-carat white, yellow or rose gold, as required. On request, we can also set it in 18-carat gold or platinum.
- Pendants: MEVISTO pendants are supplied without a chain as standard. Necklaces include the chain.
- Chain: can be ordered separately.
- Necklace (307 or 308): The pendants are attached directly to the chain.
- Rings: as devotional jewellery, engagement or wedding rings.
- Custom jewellery: Made to order according to your individual specifications
If hair or ashes are available, an order can be placed directly via the online shop – otherwise, the funeral director will take care of the next steps. Within 24 hours on a working day, a member of the Mevisto team will contact you personally.
Would you like to have a gemstone made from hair or fur?
Is it ash that is to be turned into a gemstone?
For keepsakes made from ashes, we require 50g (roughly a handful). From this, we can produce up to 12 carats in total, meaning it is also possible to create several gemstones. Important to clarify:
- is there enough ash available? If there isn’t enough, it’s possible to top it up with hair. If a child passes away before their parents, we often mix in the parents’ hair. That way, the child is never alone, even afterwards.
- Do you have the ashes? If so, you can contact MEVISTO directly or place your order via our online shop. We can provide a small collection jar to ensure the ashes are sent to us safely.
- Does the funeral director or jeweller have the ashes? If so, they can handle the order on your behalf. If there is not yet a partnership with MEVISTO, we’re always happy to assist your funeral director or jeweller.
Send us ashes or hair
To create your gemstone, we require 50 grams of ashes or 10 grams of hair. Please send the biological material to the following address:

The ashes or hair should be carefully and respectfully packed in a tightly sealed container; on request, MEVISTO can provide a shipping container in advance.
The container should be labelled – ideally with the name, dates of birth and death, and order number – and sent as an insured parcel with tracking.
If desired, the funeral home can handle the entire process. To ensure compliance with legal requirements in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the complete urn can be sent to Austria via the funeral home; MEVISTO will remove the required portion and return the urn to the crematorium or funeral director within five working days.
Something tangible takes shape
Once everything has arrived safely, the creation of a unique keepsake begins. Every step is carried out with the utmost care, reverence and respect – in the knowledge that we are holding something of inestimable personal value in our hands. For one or more gemstones, we require 30 working days. Once these have been set into a piece of jewellery, the keepsakes are ready to make their way home after 50 working days.
In the meantime, the wait is often very trying. After all, your most cherished possession is not where it’s supposed to be – at home. We always strive to keep the waiting time as short as possible. That’s why we never stop striving to improve.
Receive your keepsake
The finished memorial stone will be delivered safely and personally – you can also collect it directly from MEVISTO. If the gemstone was ordered through a funeral director, pet funeral director or jeweller, it can be collected from there free of charge.

As the first step, we carefully photograph, document, and register the material you have entrusted to us. Each sample is assigned to your order to ensure complete traceability throughout the entire production process.
We then verify that the amount of cremation ashes, hair, or fur is sufficient to create your personalized gemstone. If there are any significant discrepancies or if additional material is required, a member of our team will contact you directly to discuss the next steps.
From the very beginning of the process, your gemstone is carefully documented and assigned a unique identification number. For gemstones 0.5 carats and larger, this number is laser engraved on the girdle of the gemstone.
The engraving is not visible to the naked eye and can only be seen under high magnification. This unique code allows your gemstone to be identified and traced at any time.
A photograph of the engraving, together with a description of your gemstone's unique characteristics, is included in the accompanying MEVISTO Certificate of Authenticity.
