What is spring fever

and what do they do with our hormones?

The birds are chirping. The sun is warming. And it smells like fresh earth and new beginnings. In spring, nature awakens. And we not only enjoy this special spectacle, but we do the same: Many of us bloom now, we are more active, motivated, buoyant, forge new plans and everything suddenly feels lighter and more beautiful. At the same time, our longing for closeness increases. The much-quoted spring feelings are to blame for this.

But is that really true? What exactly are spring feelings? How can they be captured? And what do spring feelings do with our hormones? We are getting to the bottom of this.

Light and warmth play a role

First, the most important question arises: What are spring feelings? And can they even be precisely defined? Many researchers have dealt with this topic, and although some of it may not seem tangible, other aspects can be rationally explained. And in this, particularly two factors play an essential role: more daylight and rising temperatures.

Both cause us to bathe in positive emotions and often transform us in the spring. Likewise, nature itself motivates us. Its fresh colors, the sprouting stems, buds, and leaves everywhere, and the returned migratory birds create a scenario that also encourages us to grow and reinvent ourselves.

Spring feelings: A rollercoaster of hormones

These magical spring feelings are also closely linked to our hormones—they send them on a rollercoaster ride. First, there's melatonin. It is also known as the “sleep hormone” because it controls the day-night rhythm. It has its big moment in the winter, when the days get shorter and darkness falls more quickly. Then, it ensures that we often become sleepy earlier and many feel sluggish or even depressed. However, when spring arrives, the body suppresses the production of melatonin, which makes us feel more energetic again.

At the same time, it releases more serotonin instead. This “happiness hormone” can work wonders: It improves mood, banishes fears, and can even positively affect concentration. Another prominent representative of those hormones that have a say in spring feelings is endorphin. According to researchers, our organism produces this messenger substance more when sunlight hits the skin. Those who want to boost production do well to spend a few leisurely hours on the terrace or balcony in the spring. And what can endorphin do? Quite a bit: for example, inhibit pain, reduce stress, or bring about feelings of happiness.

And then there's vitamin D, which our organism also produces mainly when our skin comes into contact with sunlight. This substance is not only essential for our bones, immune system, and muscles, but also makes us more alert, vital, and satisfied.

Two more mood boosters are dopamine and noradrenaline. They inspire the inner mood of departure. All this also ensures that we are now more sociable. Studies prove: For many, the willingness to flirt increases now, and more relationships are generally entered into in the spring than in the fall. And again, serotonin often plays a major role, as it is also responsible for the sex drive.

Tips to Capture Spring Feelings

We've now covered the theory, but what about the practice? How can spring feelings best be captured? We've gathered a few tips:

Lace up the sneakers: Whether it's hiking trips in awakening nature or early morning jogging sessions—exercise is beneficial. Especially in spring, it's the best opportunity not only to discover everything that thrives along the wayside but also to produce some of the most important hormones associated with spring feelings. And perhaps you'll meet the perfect sport buddy in the process?

Explore spring cuisine: And after your workout? Then it's time for a culinary pampering program. Not only does fall know how to delight with its variety of vegetables and fruits, but spring also boasts several delicacies in season. These include wild garlic, spring onions, radishes, chard, cabbage, spinach, asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, or cherries.

From these, you can conjure up diverse dishes that not only supply the body with important nutrients but can also be enjoyed right outside on the terrace. How about wild garlic pasta and a rhubarb crumble for dessert? Invite family and friends to join!

Celebrate being outdoors: Just soaking up the spring sun is pleasant, but it gets even better when you grab your loved ones and really celebrate being outdoors together. Whether it's at a picnic, the first BBQ session of the year, an outdoor yoga session, or a card or board game round on the terrace—the possibilities are limitless.

Or you could get the garden spring-ready together, freshen up the bench with a new coat of paint, and invite all helpers for a snack.

Discover favorite spots with your partner: A lookout tower in the neighboring community, a picturesque spot by a lake shore, or even a romantic poppy field—spring is also the best time to discover new favorite places together. For beautiful hours in intimate togetherness. For those who prefer to wander farther: Short trips are also a good option and additionally feed the spring-like lust for adventure.

Saying "Thank You" to Loved Ones

Those who have found their loved ones can also use the magical boost of spring feelings to thank their partner for their love and appreciation.

For example, with one of our exquisite pieces of jewelry. These are unique, allowing you to carry the essence of your partner close to you in the future. How does it work?

Quite simply: We only need a few grams of hair for the production of our sapphires and rubies and extract biogenic material from it. Crystals are formed from this material. How dark or light these become depends on this very substance.

Whether worn as a necklace or ring—a testament of love like this is unmistakable.
