Sustainability is our imperative: Mevisto as a regional and independent gemstone maker

Creating one-of-a-kind jewelry that serves as mementos of a beloved person or a darling pet – that is our mission at Mevisto. Helping us accomplish this mission is our specially developed process thanks to which we are able to manufacture a personalized ruby or sapphire from 50 grams of ashes or 10 grams of hair in a span of just 30 work days. And, we apply the greatest amount of meticulousness and care to our work - not only because we love what we do but also because Mevisto attaches great importance to sustainability: We are a regional and independent gemstone maker. And, we would like to tell you a little bit more about us today.

Mevisto – a project of the heart rooted in Upper Austria

A few introductory words: Mevisto is and never was an enterprise that sprang from a business plan with strict targets and goals that reached maturity over many decades. Instead, it is and always has been driven by a personal experience. This experience ultimately led to a guiding principle which - quite literally - crystallized for us: Our intention is to help people in mourning and create something that will stay with them forever. This goal is exactly what motivated us many years ago to look into producing gemstones. We invested countless hours in research and development until our unparalleled processfinally saw the light of day. Since 2013, we have been living by this guiding principle every day, giving people the gift of unique jewelry that supports, reminds and strengthens them. But, that is not all: We also focus on our regional roots and sustainability. After all: Our production takes places exclusively at our company location in Kirchham, Upper Austria. In the heart of the Traunviertel region.

A product of the region

Why did we make this decision? For multiple reasons: First of all, the short traveling distances allow us to stay flexible. Secondly, we have a general aversion to the idea of exploiting cheap labor in distant lands - that is a business practice in which we would never engage. A third and fourth reason lie in the fact that we consider good relations with our suppliers of supreme importance and that we care deeply for the region. These close ties paid off for us again during the most recent global crisis. One example are our jewel cases, which are made by the cabinet makers from the immediate vicinity and whose leather is processed in the region as well. Their final assembly is then completed in collaboration with a local assisted living program. What is more, our gemstones are not polished in remote regions, either but exclusively in house on our premises. Finally, the jewelry is manufactured for us by select goldsmiths operating nearby. We simply cannot make an emotional product like ours without keeping a close eye on all raw materials and every single step of the production process.

Independent gemstone production

Better yet, our production is also self-sufficient. This means: Our photovoltaic installation powers our hydrogen generator, which in turn generates the energy we need for our gemstone production. A cyclical system that runs entirely without external energy input. Gerald Reiter, Managing Partner at Mevisto, had done extensive research on this topic even before the onset of the energy crisis. He did so because the surface area of our company premises practically cried out for us to install an environmentally compatible alternative. Aside from making us self-sufficient, the photovoltaic system we chose to install has made it possible to create our sapphires with the power of the earth.

Out of respect for life

The environment and the flora and fauna that live in it are generally of tremendous importance - both to us as a company and to the people who stand behind it. Sustainability simply runs in our blood. It is therefore no wonder that we do not use any kind to pesticides in our own private yards and allow plants to grow any way they want - including a weed or two. Moreover, we are champions of biodiversity. In other words: Protecting and promoting nature literally has always come natural to us. And, this motivation is as strong today as it has ever been. You can therefore rest assured that we will keep pushing ourselves further – because that is what our group of companies is all about. Why is sustainability so important to us? To sum it up in one sentence: Out of respect for life. It is that simple.
